The Body

My homemade
electrolyte drink.

Because most store bought ones are full of things I can't pronounce.

A terracotta-edged pool with sparkling water and prickly pear cactus

Living in California means I'm outside a lot. Between training, long walks, beach days, and just being in the sun most of the day, I go through so much water. But water alone doesn't always cut it, especially when you're sweating consistently or spending hours in the heat. Your body needs electrolytes to actually absorb and use that hydration, and I notice a real difference on the days I skip them.

I've tried most of the store bought electrolyte packets and honestly I don't love what's in them. A lot of them are full of artificial sweeteners, weird coloring, and ingredients I can't even pronounce. The thing is, it's so easy and so much more delicious to just make your own at home with real ingredients. This is the recipe I keep coming back to.

Ingredients

What you need
for one glass.

  • 1 cup coconut water
  • ½ cup water
  • ⅓ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey or maple syrup
  • 1 lime wheel for garnish
How to make it
  1. 1 Pour 1 cup coconut water and ½ cup water into a glass or shaker bottle.
  2. 2 Stir in ⅓ teaspoon fine sea salt, 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice until the salt dissolves.
  3. 3 Add 1 tablespoon raw honey or maple syrup and stir or shake well to combine.
  4. 4 Pour over ice, garnish with a lime wheel, and drink.
